Preventative Health and Wellness Isn't Considered “SEXY” – but it SHOULD BE!

I was listening to a health coaching podcast and it was an interview between two coaches discussing their coaching practices – what was working, what wasn’t, what their clients are looking for, etc.

Being the HUGE nerd that I am, I was fascinated by this conversation. I always want to gain insights into anything that will help clients, make me a better coach, and help busy moms feel BETTER.

Coach 1 mentioned their practice and the focus of a new program being on preventative coaching. Coach 2 instantly jumped in with, “Yeah, that’s probably not going to work very well.”

Coach 1: “Why?”

Coach 2: “Well, preventative health and wellness isn’t ‘sexy’ enough. You’ll never get people to buy into it.” Both coaches laughed about the ‘sexy’ description, and continued their conversation, but I paused the podcast for a minute.

I was definitely surprised by this answer. Like, don’t you WANT to prevent illness, disease, or chronic health issues? I would rather prevent them! It’s one of the reasons I started drinking green tea 15 years ago – it’s a powerful antioxidant and great for PREVENTING chronic illnesses.

Coach 2 went on to explain that most people are looking for a health coach to help them solve a CURRENT problem, not worry about preventing something that hasn’t even happened yet, or may never happen.

And I get that explanation.

But my question is, “Why can’t it be both?”

Why can’t you come to a health coach to work on something you are CURRENTLY frustrated with (weight loss, low energy, overwhelmed, too much stress, a medical problem you ARE experiencing), but get the ADDED BENEFIT of PREVENTATIVE HEALTHCARE as a bonus?

Poor nutrition and sedentary lifestyle are directly linked to several chronic diseases including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and some cancers.

If you can work with a health coach to create a wellness plan that gives you a vision of your future self, helps you set goals and meet them each week, overcome whatever issues are interfering in your life RIGHT NOW, and also PREVENT the onset of a chronic health issue, what would be the downside to that?

The truth is, I don’t know how to make preventative healthcare “sexy”. I understand why “Lose 20 pounds in 20 days” (not possible or safe, FYI!) DOES sound sexy.

Prevention and Longevity aren’t super thrilling when you’re trying not to lose your mind on a daily basis with kids, work, spouse, house, activities, bills, and life in general. Or, if you’re like me and see a VERY unflattering picture of yourself on social media (which I talked about here), you’re thinking about toning things up and dropping some pounds, not how eating more broccoli will add years to your life, fight off cancer and heart disease, lower your cholesterol, and improve your eyesight.

I’m human and vain enough to be more worried about not having abs than I am about my cholesterol levels.

But again, I ask you, why can’t it be both? If eating more broccoli will help fill me up with WAY fewer calories, gives me Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Calcium, Dietary Fiber, and Protein, and basically helps meet the “sexy” criteria of losing weight and looking better with the medicinal powers of disease prevention and longevity, all I’m seeing is win-win!

So, the next time you see a social media post, an article, or a video about the health benefits, healing powers, or preventative care associated with healthy eating habits, physical activity, or stress management just remember those go hand in hand with losing weight, increasing your energy, toning your body, reducing your stress, and all the other “sexy” problems you might be facing.

Solving a RIGHT NOW Problem might be what gets you in the door, but preventative care and longevity will be the ultimate reward for whatever investments you make in your health and wellness.

I’m Going to Tell You the SECRET No One in the Fitness Industry Wants You to Hear….

Got your attention? Okay.  Now that I’ve gotten the theatrics out of the way, I really am going to tell you the “secret”.  This applies to most, BUT NOT ALL , cases of people who are trying to lose weight, deal with medical issues, overall health, living longer, etc. Pretty much anything health related. WHAT YOU’RE EATING HAS A GREATER EFFECT ON YOUR OVERALL HEALTH THAN ANYTHING ELSE YOU DO . I managed to get myself into a debate on social media, which was unintentional and not meant to be disrespectful. But RESPECTFULLY, I completely disagreed with their stance that food and weight loss do not have an impact on health conditions.  Health risks related to diet .  Nutritional Deficiencies . Is exercise important? Yes, it is.  But you can be very active, eat terribly, and deal with all kinds of health issues. Or be active, but still overweight because of eating too much sugar, fat, salt, or too many calories overall, and have NO health issues (high blood pres...

ME AND MY BIG MOUTH....ROUND 2

Okay. So, last week I posted about getting into a social media debate  regarding nutrition, weight loss, health, and a few other things that weren’t really relevant. The point of my post (before this debate happened) was that what you’re eating can have a direct effect on your health. I still stand by this statement. I was also told that because I have a link to a guide that says “ Natural GLP-1 Boosters ”, I “obviously” am not interested in science. When I explained it’s a list of healthy foods (general and specific) and recipes to go along with, I was then told “Food Isn’t Medicine”. I beg to differ.  While I agree that food is not MEDICATION , I do not agree that food cannot be “a compound or preparation used for the treatment or prevention of disease”, as MEDICINE is defined in the dictionary. BUT…. In the interest of playing devil’s advocate, I’m going to throw this out there…. Who cares? So what if “food isn’t medicine”? Does that mean it’s going to HURT y...

DO YOU KNOW “WHY”?

Why do you want to start a health journey? Why are you on a health journey? Why is your health important to you? As a busy mom, these three questions are important to ask yourself if you’re working on your health or thinking about working on it. Because, honestly, we've already got enough going on in our lives.  You might find out you’re not even trying to be healthier/eat better/move more/lose weight for the reasons you THOUGHT you were. Maybe you’re thinking about losing weight because someone made a comment that hurt your feelings. Or you went to put on a dress you haven’t worn in a while, and it doesn’t fit anymore. Maybe you don’t have energy like you used to and you’re tired of feeling tired all the time. Maybe you’re noticing that you overall don’t feel good after eating candy or cookies when it didn’t used to bother you before. Or maybe a relative is in poor health much younger than they should be and it’s got you thinking about how you want to be capable and act...
