HEALTH AND WELLNESS BACKLASH

I've seen a LOT of comments on social media regarding health/weight loss/nutrition/exercise/etc. And those comments hit every part of the spectrum from intense "push to look like a fitness model" remarks, to "include all body's at every size no matter what".

And this is probably not a popular opinion, but I feel like the "right" answer lies somewhere in between.

We currently have an overweight/obesity epidemic in our country right now. It's a straight up fact. 60% of our adult population (18 and up) is overweight or obese.

NOW...what does that mean? Herein lies the problem. For many people, it means health problems that require doctors' visits, medications, and a near-constant struggle to feel better.

For others, it doesn't mean that much. Maybe your knees give you trouble, or some days you feel crummier than others. But your weight doesn't have a significant impact on how you feel daily.

This is where I'm going to sound like a total jerk.

I don't care what you look like. There. I said it. Not in a mean, ugly, or derogatory way. Your weight is subjective anyway.

What I CARE about is your health! And I think a LOT of our health issues can be corrected or reversed if we stop eating ultra-processed foods as our MAIN food source and start eating more whole foods.

I am in the same boat. As I write this post (day after Christmas), I have brownies, a pie, and a couple of bags of chips sitting in my kitchen that I REALLY want to eat. I also have bananas, apples, oatmeal, eggs, whole wheat bread, nut butter, that are just sitting there waiting for me to make a healthy breakfast.

After several days of eating pretty much anything I want (chips and dip, brownies, cobbler, mashed potatoes and gravy, fried chicken, fast food, etc.) MY BODY is telling me it's time to go back to healthier options. I don't feel as well as I would like. My mood is off. My brain feels foggy, and food chatter is taking up more space than it should ("you know, those brownies are just sitting there, waiting...").

For my HEALTH, it's time to make some adjustments - eating healthier options and moving more.

And I'm not "punishing" myself for eating bad, I'm not trying to "fix" days of eating unhealthy foods by flipping a switch and eating nothing but lean protein and vegetables.

I'm just picking back up with my healthy eating efforts, I'm moving my body in healthy ways (walking and toning exercises), and I'm drinking more water.

What are you ready to do for your HEALTH? Eat an apple instead of a brownie? Do 5 squats while you load the dishwasher? Drink a glass of water instead of a soda?

Maybe it's time to shift how you're looking at your health and wellness goals. Not to "fix", but to heal. To give your body the "medicine" it needs to feel better and function correctly. To jump back into the second half of the school year (as busy moms, you know what I'm talking about!), with more energy and better focus.

There's no need to feel like you've "blown it" over the holidays. You don't have to wait for the New Year to focus on losing weight or eating better or exercising more, or whatever. Just eat a piece of fruit today. March in place for a few minutes. Bend down and touch your toes. Drink ONE glass of water.

You got this.

THE HEALTH LOOP YOU DIDN’T EVEN KNOW YOU WERE IN….

Well, that’s not entirely correct. You probably KNOW you’re in it, you’re just not sure what to do about it or how to get OUT of it. Let me explain. In this article I talked about five top health issues we face as busy moms: weight loss, stress management, sleep deprivation, dealing with mom guilt, and struggling with life balance. And the truth is, all of these health issues can be interconnected in ways we aren’t even aware of. You’re a busy mom. You’re going to have a hectic schedule. That can lead to sleep deprivation, which can lead to stress or weight gain (or both), which can lead to more sleep deprivation, which circles back to mom guilt for being tired and cranky and stressed out, and you’re trying to find a way to balance it all…. Sound familiar? In the article , I mentioned that an easy first step is to just Start Small . Have one glass of water. Take a 5-minute walk. Do 5 squats while you’re waiting for the microwave. Eat one piece of fruit. Just one little thing...

THE BREAKDOWN DAY - (warning, kinda personal)

We all have them. We’re busy moms, holding life together by a thread. You’ve had a series of THINGS happen. And by the way, it’s a BIG misconception, that it just came out of nowhere. No, it didn’t. This meltdown has been building up over time, like lava beneath the earth’s surface. The “things” can be big or small, it really doesn’t matter. It’s just a bunch of issues over time that build and build. You may have had moments where you thought you had dealt with them. But in reality, you were probably just dealing with PIECES of the issue, and the rest was getting shoved aside to be handled another time. Only, you’re a BUSY MOM! “Another Time” rarely comes. You’re pushing ahead through the next thing and the next. I’m just going to use my example really quickly because I know EVERYONE’S situation is different. Perimenopause is causing a plethora of physical issues including night sweats, fatigue, sleep disruption, mood swings, weight gain, and others. Big Issue . Crazy sc...

EVEN AS A HEALTH COACH, ONE OF THE HARDEST LESSONS I’M STILL LEARNING

MY FOOD IS FOR NOURISHING MY BODY , and even though I’m ALLOWED to eat whatever I want, if I want my body to be well and function for me, I’ve got to give it what it needs. I’ve seen way too many posts about how “toxic” it is to chase being skinny, and trying to lose weight means you don’t love yourself enough as you are, or accept yourself for who you are. Fair enough. If that’s how you feel, I understand. I’m not suggesting anyone turn themselves inside out or upside down to chase a number on the scale or a certain size jeans. But I AM suggesting that if you want your body to function optimally, you have to nourish it with the foods it needs. Your body needs protein, it needs fats, it needs carbs (yes, really), it needs vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and water. The ratios in which your body needs these nutrients will vary, but you still need them. And I’ve been gaining a lot of clarity in the last few years as I’ve gotten older, learned more about health, nutrition, and ...
